Waterflow Drill, Perth Amboy - Buckeye Facility
The Perth Amboy Fire Department was dispatched, drill, to the Buckey Facility for a reported explosion and fire with injuries. This facility is used for crude petroleum storage. The first alarm assignment responded to the initial incident and rescued the injured parties and then made an attempt to extinguish the fire. As the incident escalated and the fire size grew additional companies and resources were called.
Before the drill came to a conclusion, one of the drill objectives were met, water flow in excess of 7000gpms. At one point 8000gpm was reached with the ability to still flow another 1000gpm. The initial water supply came from the on-site hydrant. Later a 4200ft LDH relay from an offsite hydrant in Woodbridge was systematically utilized via Middlesex County North East regional LDH strike team.
Two refill ponds were set up at the Buckeye Facility, with 4 ponds at each site, to assist in supplying the needed water. Each site could handle 4 tenders supplying water. Tanker/tenders were utilized from the Middlesex County Tanker/Tender Task Force and was assisted by tanker/tenders from Somerset, Monmouth, Mercer, and Burlington.
In total, 310 firefighters participated in the drill. Specialty apparatus, including but not limited to UASI foam tenders, Carteret's foam tender and brand new pierce foam super pumper, Kendal Park (South Brunswick twp) / Middlesex County Fire Marshal's foam trailer/deluge unit, Middlesex County OEM command bus, various gators and Polaris', and the Salvation Army rehab canteen truck operating on scene.
